Why Is My Business Not Showing on Google Maps?
Short answer
Usually one of six things: the profile is not verified, it is suspended, a recent edit is still under review (up to 3 days), the business is new (ranking can take up to a month), there are duplicate listings, or it is on Maps but ranks below others for the words you searched. Search your exact business name on Google Maps first: if you appear, it is a ranking problem, not a visibility one.

Find out which problem you have
Open Google Maps in a private browser window, so your own history does not help you, and work through these checks in order. The table after them matches what you see to its cause and fix.
- Search your exact business name on Google Maps. If it appears, the problem is ranking, not visibility.
- Check the profile status. Look for a verification prompt or a suspended or disabled notice in your Business Profile.
- Check recent edits. Changes can take up to 3 days to appear; wait before editing again.
- Look for duplicates. Keep one profile per business; claim and merge or remove extras.
- Work on ranking. Choose the right primary category, complete every field, and keep genuine reviews coming.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Searching your exact business name on Google Maps finds nothing, and you have never finished verification. | The profile is not verified. Google says only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search. | Finish verification in your Business Profile: phone or text, email, a live video call, or a postcard (most postcard codes arrive within 14 days). Google says verification reviews take up to 5 business days. |
| Your Business Profile shows a "Suspended" or "Disabled" notice. | Google found a guideline breach. A suspended profile is hidden from other people until the issue is resolved. | Fix the breach, then appeal once with documents. See the suspended profile guide linked below. |
| You changed the name, address, category or hours in the last few days. | The edit is still being reviewed. Google says changes can take up to 3 days to appear. | Give it the 3 days before changing anything else, so you can see which edit is still pending. |
| The business is new, or the profile was created in the last few weeks. | Google says rankings for new businesses can take up to a month. | Complete every field now so the profile is ready, and start asking customers for reviews. |
| Your exact name finds you, but "dentist near me" or "plumber in Leeds" does not. | You are on Maps; this is ranking, not visibility. Google ranks on relevance, distance and prominence. | Work on the parts you control: the right primary category, complete details, and a steady flow of genuine reviews. |
| There are two listings for the same place, or an old one from a previous owner. | Duplicates. Google says there should be only one profile per business, and duplicates cause problems with how your information displays. | Claim the extra listing and ask Google to merge or remove it. Do not create another one. |
If you are on Maps but not ranking
Google describes local ranking with three factors. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the person searching. Prominence is how well known the business is, and Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help.
You cannot change distance, and you cannot pay for ranking. You can change these:
- Primary category. Google asks for as few categories as possible, chosen as “this business is a”, not “this business has a”. A dental clinic is a dentist; it is not a car park because it has one.
- Complete, accurate details. Hours, phone, website, services and photos. Google says business visibility relies on correct, complete and current details.
- Genuine reviews, steadily. Ask every customer, not only the happy ones: Google’s policy bans selectively asking for positive reviews and bans incentives such as discounts for reviews. A direct review link or QR code makes asking quicker; the free review link generator makes both.
- Replies. Answering reviews shows the next customer that someone is listening.
Remember that results change with where the searcher stands. Searching from inside your shop shows you near the top; a customer across town may see a different list.
What not to do
- Do not add keywords or a city to your business name. It breaks Google’s naming rule and can get the profile suspended.
- Do not create a second profile to “start fresh”. Google allows one profile per business.
- Do not buy reviews or trade discounts for them. Google treats both as fake engagement.
- Do not pile more edits on while one is under review. Give it the 3 days, so you can tell what changed.

Questions
How long does it take for a new business to show on Google Maps?
After the profile is verified, Google says edits can take up to 3 days to appear and rankings for new businesses can take up to a month. If you verify by postcard, Google says most codes arrive within 14 days.
Does verifying my business make it rank higher?
Verification is what lets your business info show on Maps and Search at all. Where it ranks then depends on relevance, distance and prominence, which is how Google describes local ranking.
Can I pay Google to rank higher on Google Maps?
No. Google states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Google Ads can place your business in a sponsored slot, marked as an ad, but that does not change where your profile ranks without the ad.
Why did my business suddenly disappear from Google Maps?
Check the profile status first. A suspension hides the profile until it is resolved. If the status is normal, look for a recent edit still under review, a duplicate listing, or a drop in ranking for the search you tried, which you can confirm by searching your exact business name.
Why is my address not shown on Google Maps?
If you serve customers at their location and they do not come to you, Google requires you to hide your address and show a service area instead. The profile still appears for searches in that area, without a pin at your address.
Should I add keywords to my business name to show up more?
No. Google’s guidelines say the name should be your real-world name as used on your storefront and website, without keywords, taglines or locations. Stuffing the name breaks the guidelines, and profiles that break them can be suspended.
