How to Remove Fake Google Reviews (and What Google Won’t Remove)

Short answer

Google removes reviews that break its policies, not reviews you disagree with. Report the review from your Business Profile (Read reviews → Report) and pick the policy reason that fits. Evaluation typically takes several days; track it in the Reviews Management Tool. If Google keeps it, you get one appeal, covering up to 10 reviews.

Which reviews Google will take down

A report works when it names the rule the review breaks. Match the review to a row and use that reason. The wording on the right is the category name in Google’s content policy.

The reviewThe policy it breaks
Posted by someone who was never a customer, or by a competitorFake engagement: contributions should reflect a genuine experience at the place.
Paid for, or left in exchange for a discountFake engagement. Google bans incentives for reviews, whoever offers them.
A wave of one-star ratings with no text, from accounts with no historyRating manipulation.
About politics, the news, or another businessOff-topic.
Names or targets a member of your staff, or shares a phone numberHarassment, or personal information.
Swearing or slursObscenity and profanity, or hate speech.
Promotes another business or links to a websiteAdvertising and solicitation.
The same text pasted again and againRepetitive content.

A harsh review from a real customer about a real visit breaks none of these, however unfair it feels. Google is explicit: do not report a review just because you dislike it.

How to report it, step by step

  1. Open your Business Profile and select Read reviews. Find the review you want removed.
  2. Select the Report icon next to the review. Choose the policy reason that fits, such as Spam or Profanity, then Send report.
  3. Track it in the Reviews Management Tool. Statuses include Decision pending, Report reviewed - no policy violation, and Escalated - check your email for updates. Evaluation typically takes several days.
  4. Appeal once if it stays. In the Reviews Management Tool, select Appeal eligible reviews. One appeal covers up to 10 reviews.
  5. Reply publicly while you wait. A calm, factual reply tells other readers you do not recognise the visit, without accusing anyone.

You can also start from the Reviews Management Tool: choose your business, select Report a new review for removal, pick the review, then the reason, and submit.

What actually protects your rating

Removal is slow and not guaranteed. What dilutes one bad review is a steady stream of genuine ones. Ask every customer, not only the happy ones: Google bans selectively asking for positive reviews and bans incentives. A direct review link or a QR code at the counter makes asking take seconds; make both with the free review link generator.

Questions

Can Google remove a negative review I disagree with?

No. Google says not to report a review just because you disagree with it or dislike it. Only reviews that break its policies are removed. A fair but negative review stays; reply to it instead.

How long does Google take to review a reported review?

Google says evaluation typically takes several days. You can check the status in the Reviews Management Tool.

What if Google refuses to remove a fake review?

You get one appeal. In the Reviews Management Tool, choose Appeal eligible reviews; one appeal covers up to 10 reviews. After that, a clear public reply is your best tool.

Should I ask friends to post reviews to push the fake ones down?

No. Reviews must reflect a genuine experience. Reviews from people who were not customers are fake engagement under Google’s policy, which is the same thing you are reporting.

How should I reply to a review I think is fake?

Stay short and factual: say you cannot find a record of the visit, invite the person to contact you directly, and leave it there. Readers judge the reply as much as the review.

Does reporting a review hurt my profile?

Google does not say that reporting in good faith has any effect on your profile. Report reviews that break a policy, pick the reason that fits, and do not report fair reviews.
